Comic Books, the golden source of today's entertainment

Date Added: November 28, 2007 06:26:15 PM

You want to be rich and famous. You could become a movie star. Or, you could design some software or operative system and become the next Bill Gates. There is just one little obstacle between you and your success: the only thing you like and are good at is with comic books. Reading, writing and drawing them .

Guess what? ...That is also a very appreciated skill these days. Just look around....You are surrounded by millions of dollars invested in giant posters of: Spiderman, Superman, The Hulk, X-men, Daredevil, and even the league of extraordinary gentlemen. The list is huge.... Zillions of dollars coming out from those pages you hold every night.

Fame?...Randomly: Neil Gaiman, Joe Kubert, Alan Moore, Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Mike Deodato Jr., Jack Kirby,  Wil Eisner, Joe Shuster, Greg Land, Greg Horn, Kevin Smith....And the list goes on for many hours....

So, the picture changed. There are no more adults hiding in their bathroom to read their favorite Wolverine issue. Kids, are not the main target for the comics industry. (I wonder If they ever were .....)

You can think of a comic book as a small play; a comprised movie where you could get inspired, entertained or even learn something from life. After all, comic books in structure and creation process are not so different from movies or theatre.

You got a script. Sometimes more precise and sometimes just a plot enough for the artist to create their layout to be populated by dialogue balloons later, again by the writer. There are as many variations of work styles as artists dedicated to this.

You could compare a movie script with a comic script and, If there wouldn't be any lines showing "Page 1 - Panel 2" you could take a comic script for a movie script. Then, you got that all major productions are taking their eyes to this source of inspiration. They see a whole generation with figures such as Superman, Batman, Fantastic four, Spiderman deeply inside their minds and hearts.

They are the new mythology. The Human kind has always needed heroes. That's why you find Hercules, Samson, Aquiles, Odin, and many other fantastic characters created with the intention, maybe, of inspiring the youngest to look further, to aim to the stars; they created something to dream with; Something to believe in. What is more important to those wanting to cultivate the so called,¨"one of the hardest art form", is the Know-How.

There are a lot of angles involved in this activity that most people ignore. Not only rules to follow or be guided by, but legal information related to authorship which could lead to problems that could be easily avoided. The world of publishing is not as closed as in the past. Only a few artists could have the opportunity to publish their efforts. Nowadays, there are a lot of resources for beginners and seasoned creators alike.

I can hear you say:

"I know I could make it If only some tutor told me where to go and how to sell my stuff"... Yeah! You could make it! Internet is a great resource. It is an oracle where you can query the most unthinkable and get a response. Most of the time, the answers are better than expected.

Don't waste your time. Ask those who know and are willing to share their knowledge with you. Good luck with your goals!
